Chapter#1: The Last Warm Breath

Updated: Jan 6

What does it mean to miss someone?

How far can it reach?

A question I ask, but never quite say.

It's a quiet ache, a pain untold,

Time stumbles, failing to mend or convey.

It’s not the miles that make us distant;

It’s the fading us, and the spontaneous decay.

No matter how fiercely you call,

It’s the heart that must bleed and pay.

I shattered walls, broke every chain,

To find you, to reach you, to get back the love we lost.

But here I stand in the still of night,

Doors closed, no refuge from the biting frost.

The air is sharp, the world turns still,

And all warmth I had is memory of you.

It’s below freezing, where even pain fades,

And yet, my thoughts, like embers, burn for you.

For a while, you were the fire in my veins,

The glow that kept my soul alive.

But now that glow has long since died,

And the last of me surrenders to the night.

My breath slows; I can’t hold on.

Still, your face lingers in my mind’s haze;

A phantom hand, imagined warmth,

A hope that never truly stays.

And then the machine stops: no sound, no fight.

Peace in the cold, an eternal night.

I’m alone at the end, as I was at the start,

Held only by silence, cradled by dark.

You never embraced me when I needed you near,

Yet this endless night holds me tight in fear.

The chills have taken me, I concede;

But even so, it’s your name...I breathe.
